Madrone
Native to the Pacific Northwest, madrone is a hard and dense wood with brown to pink heartwood and whiteish sapwood. Janka hardness rating: 1460.
Bigleaf maple
A prolific tree in western Oregon, bigleaf maple offers pale sapwood and pinkish heartwood. Janka hardness rating: 850.
Chinquapin
A relative of chestnut, giant chinquapin has wild color and grain variation. These two samples, laid side by side, came from the same tree. Native to the Northwest and common in the coast range. Janka hardness rating: 730.
Western walnut
Either native Claro or orchard English walnut, local varieties of this wood offer dark wood with deep, rich color. Janka hardness rating: 1010.
Oregon ash
Consistently light in color, ash shows open pores and offers relative hardness. Janka hardness rating: 1160.
Red alder
Janka hardness rating: 590.
Eastern maple
Also known as hard or sugar maple, this consistently light-colored wood is prolific in the eastern US. Janka hardness rating: 1450.
FSC cherry
A classic American cabinet wood. Initially, pink to light brown in color, cherry will age to a deep, dark brown. Janka hardness rating: 1160.
Bamboo
Technically a grass, bamboo offers a hard, quickly-renewable material. Combine with wheatboard for a tree-free cabinet. Janka hardness rating: 1400.
